Interior Design FAQs

We know that hiring an interior designer can feel like a big step, especially if you're not sure what to expect. Here are some of the most common questions we get from homeowners in the Durham Region and beyond.

+ What does an interior designer actually do?

An interior designer helps transform your space into something functional, beautiful, and tailored to your lifestyle. From creating floor plans and choosing finishes to sourcing furniture and styling every last detail, we guide you through the entire process, whether it's a full renovation or a room refresh.

Designing a home comes with a lot of moving parts and can quickly become overwhelming. Between managing timelines, coordinating trades, sourcing from multiple vendors, and making hundreds of decisions along the way, there's a lot to juggle. We take all of that off your plate. Our job is to handle the complexities and present you with clear, thoughtful options—not problems. Often, you'll only be brought in for the key decisions, with the confidence that every choice has been carefully considered through a professional lens.

+ How much does it cost to hire an interior designer?

Each designer has their own way of quoting jobs. Some offer fixed-price packages, while others bill hourly or work on a retainer. Costs can vary depending on the size and complexity of the project.

While hiring a designer is an investment, it can actually save you time, money, and costly mistakes in the long run. You're not just paying for ideas; you're paying for expertise, project management, trade resources, and a seamless process from start to finish. It's always best to have a clear conversation early on about fees, services, and what's included, so you know exactly what to expect.

+ Do I need an interior designer or a decorator?

Interior designers focus on both how a space looks and works, handling everything from layouts and materials to coordinating renovations, and finishing it all off by styling and choosing furnishings. Decorators primarily focus on styling, choosing furniture, colors, and accessories to make a room feel polished.

In short: designers plan, build, style and finish; decorators style and finish.

+ How do I choose the right interior designer?

A good place to start is searching for designers in your area online and reviewing their portfolios or asking your network for trusted referrals. Booking a consultation is key to making sure their process, aesthetic, and personality align with you and what you're looking for.

+ Can interior designers help with small homes or condos?

Definitely! Many homes in and around the Durham Region have compact floor plans, and we love the challenge of maximizing space through smart layouts, built-in storage, and custom furnishings.

+ Do you work with contractors or tradespeople?

Yes! We regularly collaborate with trusted local trades like contractors, electricians, and millworkers to ensure the design is executed properly from start to finish.

+ How long does an interior design project take?

The timeline really depends on the scale of the project. From start to finish, a design project can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. In design, there are many moving parts, such as scheduling multiple trades where one can sometimes delay another depending on availability, as well as ordering materials, product backorders, and delivery delays. All of these can significantly impact the overall timeline.

+ Do you offer remote or virtual design services?

We have offered remote and virtual design services in the past, but found it challenging to provide the best experience this way. Selecting materials and finishes virtually can be tricky because color, texture, and quality are often hard to judge through digital means. Since we pride ourselves on delivering quality service, virtual design posed too much of a risk to meet our standards.

+ Do you help source furniture and décor?

Yes! We are a full-service design firm, which means we guide your project from initial concepts all the way through to the final details, including furniture and décor selections. Beyond just picking pieces, we handle product research, vendor relationships, ordering, and delivery coordination to ensure everything arrives on time and fits perfectly in your space. We also manage budgets and timelines, so you don't have to worry about the logistics. Our goal is to make the entire process seamless and enjoyable for you.
